HELPING HAND
An outreach assistance program sponsored by
the Men’s Ministry of Kingwood United Methodist Church.
MISSION
HELPING HAND is a fellowship of Christian men, dedicated to serving those individuals and families which may be home-bound, debilitated, or otherwise suffering from incapacitating circumstance preventing them from performing normal and routine activities typically required to maintain normal household functions.
What is it?
Christian men, some retired, some semi-retired, some employed, others students, but all sharing a common passion and goal; that which is stated in our KUMC Mission statement; “reaching out in Christian witness, evangelism, and missions, serving one another as an extension of God’s love in our world”.
This is a group requiring dedication and accountability. As a whole, we will be on duty 7 days a week. Individual activity is probably limited to 2-4 hours/month. When our congregational members need help, our hand will be the first to reach out. We have tremendous assets in our retired men who can reach out during the week to provide transportation, lawn maintenance, light repairs, and general ministry to our home bound and temporarily disabled. We have stronger hands in our younger men that can reach out on week-ends and provide the heavy lifting of more complicated or difficult task.
We are here to step in and fill short term gaps in the fluidity breaks in family’s lives. We are looking to offer assistance, aid and comfort to those who have had misfortune step into their lives and as such, can’t or are not able to keep basic household maintenance and small repairs up to date over short or temporary periods of time.
How do we do it?
Enlist those men interested in this program. Separate into teams as per individual’s availability. Each team has a leader and co-leader. These leaders and co-leaders are on call during their respective available duty cycles. That could be 1 day a week or 1 day every 2-3 weeks. Membership numbers will influence duty cycles. We have a central “hot-line” into the main KUMC office. When a call is received requesting some type of assistance, KUMC staff will call the leader or co-leader on duty and inform them of the call. The leader or co-leader will arrange to visit the needy caller and scope out the requirement. A simple request may be taken care of on the spot. More difficult request may require a coordinated effort with the whole team or several teams.
Who do we help?
We start out helping those needy in our congregation. As we mature and grow, we can reach further out to the larger community. Perhaps even foster the same type of HELPING HAND group at other local churches for an even greater outreach.
Outreach /Spiritual Growth / Service
We are reaching out to our church community men and giving them a chance to participate in service. We are reaching out to non-member men and offering a chance to join a meaningful (funnel) activity.
We will meet once a month as a total group for fellowship and spiritual rejuvenation.
We are spreading the joy of GODS word as we help those in need. Our deeds are passed by word of mouth to others, many who may not know the word and if we can reach just one who does not know or believe and bring Christ to that person, we have truly become “fishermen”.
